A Virginia man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly held a woman and two children captive in his home, a law enforcement official said.

"I've never seen no red flags", Showers said. "I'd never seen them, didn't know they were there, didn't have any idea anybody had been living there".

The officers went to the home after the woman's family member called and requested deputies perform a welfare check.

Showers told 8News he remembers Moore, his girlfriend and the two children moving into the rental home roughly four years ago. They have since been released into the custody of relatives. While deputies were talking to the man a woman and two children ran out of a side door, officials confirmed.

While police say the mother and children were held captive for more than two years, Showers told 8News he believes he saw them last winter. The grass is unmowed and two worn-out cars sit out front.

Moore has been arrested and charged with abduction and felony assault and battery.

The woman is in stable condition at a medical facility.

"Just unbelievable", Showers added.

Johnson, who teaches geography and social studies at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania County, said the neighborhood is generally filled with kids playing outside, with one or two parents casually keeping watch.

Carey says the woman is Moore's girlfriend and he is believed to be the children's father. "The first thing I thought was, 'oh my goodness'".

Moore is unemployed, a sheriff's spokesperson tells PEOPLE. The investigation revealed that the woman and children had been held against their will at the residence for more than 2 years. Stay with 8News online and on air for the latest updates.
