Alfre Woodard and John Kani to star in The Lion King

Disney's live-action The Lion King remake has cast Simba's mother Sarabi and his royal adviser Rafiki.

True Blood actress Alfre Woodard will be joining the highly anticipated blockbuster as Simba's mum Sarabi.

It looks like Disney's remake of The Lion King has its voice cast nearly done!

Fans last saw Kani as King T'Chaka, T'Challa/Black Panther's father, in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Lion King is now shooting in Los Angeles.

Disney are rebooting the beloved 1994 animated movie with "Jungle Book" filmmaker Jon Favreau helming the project and Chiwetel Ejiofor is reportedly in talks to play the villain of the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The pair join a growing star-studded cast that includes James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa, Donald Glover as Simba, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa and John Oliver as Zazu.

Woodard and Kani previously costarred in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.

Global entertainment website, The Wrap reported that it had exclusively learnt that John had been added to the star-studded cast.

Lion King is set to arrive in theaters July 18, 2019.
