The Dutch Robin Haase became the first semi-finalist of the component male of the Rogers Cup thanks to a victory in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in front of the Argentine Diego Schwartzman, Friday afternoon, on the centre court of the Uniprix Stadium.

That snapped a remarkable run of 32 consecutive sets won by Federer, who had seemingly found another gear by breaking Ferrer at the first time of asking in the second.

Shapovalov spent much of the match alternating between errors and impressive winners, consistently fighting off break points on his serve.

"I think it pays off playing aggressive here in Montreal", Federer said in a courtside interview after his 6-4 6-4 win over the 12th seed.

'This is how I want to play for the whole week. I don't know about myself either.

"I hope it gives me a lot of confidence", Haase said of his performance for the week. "Roger plays very fast and he didn't want to rally with me, so he went for his shots".

The 36-year-old Federer has his longest winning streak since 2012.

Meanwhile, Zverev is 4-1 in 2017 finals, losing only to Federer 6-1, 6-3 in Halle.

But if wins over Mannarino, Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro have been any indication, Shapovalov-who is the youngest player ever to reach a Masters 1000 semifinal-could be on a collision course for a championship clash with Federer.

Alexander Zverev is just two years senior of breakout star Denis Shapovalov, but the German is way ahead of the blossoming Canadian in big-match experience on the ATP Tour. Shapovalov also upset former US Open victor Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round. It was the fourth time in five matches he lost the first set, but this time there was no coming back.

He saved the first with an ace but Ferrer made no mistake with his second set point, converting to take the opener 6-4. He let a set point slip away with Ferrer serving at 3-5, but Federer served out the second set in the 10th game. "Both things combined, two major factors in a beginning of a match, I was able to get into the match better".

Federer grabbed a second service break late in the third set to effectively seal the victory and improve to 17-0 lifetime against the 35-year-old Spaniard. Haase has had to overcome several injuries in his career but says he is finally in a good place.

"I have no words, this is unbelievable", the youngster said. I came back really fast, from zero to 60 in eight months. So, these statistics are a bit ridiculous, because I have a lot of respect for David. Then this kind of eats you up inside mentally. "I still have to work really hard every day".

In doubles semifinals, seventh-seeded Rohan Bopanna of India and Ivan Dodig of Croatia defeated sixth-seeded Raven Klaasen of the Netherlands and Rajeev Ram of the United States 4-6, 7-6 (8), 11-9; and fifth-seeded Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut of France downed eighth-seeded Oliver Marach of Austria and Mate Pavic of Croatia 7-5, 6-3.

Federer has a 22-1 record on hardcourts this season after winning the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami Open titles earlier this year.
