This Surprised Me About Nemanja Matic - Former Manchester United Boss

Expressing his delight in being reunited with the Serbia global, the boss admitted he admires Matic and the qualities he brings as an experienced player.

Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson admits that Nemanja Matic's passing range against West Ham on Sunday surprised him.

"When [Marcus] Rashford threaded the ball in for [Romelu] Lukaku, have a look at him".

A defensive midfielder, Matic operates higher up the pitch than Michael Carrick and he is more athletic and dynamic than Marouane Fellaini. "It's the way I trust the player is going to perform, so I think it was a fantastic signing for us".

"So when I got the call that Matic wants to play for me and wants to play for Manchester United - and that we could make it happen - I thought he's the ideal player for me".

Last season, United lacked energy and power in the deeper midfield area.

Mourinho was determined to sign Matic throughout the summer, and now that he has got his man, the Portuguese can't hide his excitement and happiness.

The Arsenal hero was impressed with the Serbia international's performance in the 4-0 win against West Ham yesterday in the Premier League.

For all the attention on Romelu Lukaku and his two goals, the source of the Belgian's opener did not go unnoticed at Old Trafford.

"When I joined United a year ago I thought immediately that we needed a Matic".

Last season, United were too often pressed back into their own defensive third, but that is less likely to happen with Matic in the team.

The Red Devils landed the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League last term, but could only finish sixth during a disappointing Premier League campaign.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has already indicated the selling Matic to Manchester United was not his decision.

Jose Mourinho is evidently happy with the capture of Nemanja Matic from his former club Chelsea.

Every aspiring Premier League champion needs a dominant midfielder and, by signing Matic, United now have one again.
