On Thursday, he threw a handful of passes to receivers in one-on-one and seven-on-seven drills, but his timing appeared to be off and several fell incomplete.

"Played a couple joint practices in the past and the preseason game".

"It certainly seems. that he's coming out on the correct end of this shoulder surgery", Rapoport told NFL Network on Thursday, noting that the team believes they'll finally be through with Newton's rehab process when he, at last, sees live action.

Newton then went 14 days with limited throwing and no participation in team drills until he threw some in the red zone on the last day of the Wofford College portion of training camp.

According to ESPN staff writer, David Newton, sources notified ESPN that Newton will again be sidelined for the Panthers game against Tennessee on Saturday.

"You could tell [Newton] was rusty. Now it's just a matter of getting him into shape where he can go out there and take normal reps, instead of us having to make sure we're monitoring him".

Rivera has said consistently that the goal is to have Newton ready for the September 10 opener at San Francisco, not the preseason. While Cam Newton didn't suit up, the other quarterbacks used this time to show how they would perform under center. It wouldn't be ideal, but Newton's health is obviously important for the overall success of the Panthers. He completed only 50-percent of his pass attempts and registered more interceptions than touchdowns.

When he does, these preseason game absences will be forgotten.
