While she didn't pose on the red carpet, a couple of backstage shots show the 21-year-old absolutely glowing.

Alessia Carawon her first moonman at MTV Video Music Awards.

A hair fluff and a tissue smeared across her lips, and Cara transformed back into the self she typically performs as-her voice, and the message that you're lovely no matter what, incredible throughout. The video for "Scars To Your Beautiful" is up for Video of the Year, although her competition includes Kendrick Lamar's "Humble."; Bruno Mars' "24K Magic"; DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts"; and The Weeknd's "Reminder". The song is all about body image.

I need to pour one out for a minute - at least on behalf of Alessia Cara's hair and makeup team for the painstaking time and effort it takes to glam-up someone performing at such a huge event like the VMAs. She burst onto the scene after her YouTube videos of acoustic covers caught DefJam Recordings' attention. She also belted hits such as "Just Give Me a Reason", "So What", "Perfect" and new single "What About Us".

Earlier this year, Cara won two awards at the Canadian Music Awards. The pop star we love took to the stage to introduce Logic, Khalid, and Alessia Cara before they performed Logic's song "1-800-273-8255", and, in her speech, addressed the sensitive subjects of suicide and feeling alone. An orchestra played the instrumental as 1-800-273-8255, the phone number to the suicide prevention hotline, lined the stage and provided the backdrop for the orchestra.

Actor-singer Jared Leto also paid moving tributes to his friends, legendary artistes Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell at the ceremony.
