Van Dijk must fight for spot - Davis

Van Dijk does not want to be at Southampton any longer, and while the club prefer not to sell him, they can not want him hanging around as a distraction all season long.

As for Coutinho, well every Liverpool fan appreciates the lure of a potential move to Barcelona and the Brazilian can expect a warm welcome back into Jurgen Klopp's squad if he is available for selection once again after the upcoming worldwide break.

And Southampton is expecting to play Van Dijk in the same team as Hoedt, who signed a five-year contract on Tuesday.

Reports have continued to link Van Dijk with a move to Merseyside all summer, but Yahoo Sport have led the way with a series of exclusive stories that have highlighted Southampton's determination not to sell their defender to Liverpool.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to be unwilling to concede defeat in his efforts to sign Virgil van Dijk and Thomas Lemar.

The 26-year-old is now in limbo with six days until the 2017 summer window slams shut, and will either spend the next four months sitting in the stands or be forced to climb down from his perch and become integrated back into Mauricio Pellegrino's first-team squad for the time being.

Cue a stand-off that has continued over the course of three long and uncomfortable months for all involved.

Yet Southampton have also been infuriated by the input of Van Dijk's current advisers, who staged talks over the player's transfer with Liverpool earlier this year without the permission of the south coast club.

Today, the latest on the future of Virgil van Dijk...

Davis went on to insist that the squad would welcome the want-away team captain back with open arms, despite submitting a transfer request among other on-going fiascoes including wage fines and refusing to travel for pre-season camps.

Although Arsenal's pursuit of van Dijk will be welcomed by fans in north London, one major worry around the club's transfer policy is the way they are reactive and not proactive.
