She said: "I share the deep disappointment felt by the family of Ibrahim Halawa following the postponement of a verdict".

In a 25 minute phone call Leo Varadkar made it clear to President Al-Sisi that his priority was to secure Ibrahim's return as soon as possible.

"We expect Ibrahim Halawa to be returned to Ireland as soon as a verdict is delivered in his trial", he said.

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan says it's time says it's time the Government harden's its stance.

The 21-year-old from Firhouse in Dublin was one of hundreds arrested in Cairo in August 2013, during anti-government protests.

President Sisi has assured the government that this will be the case, a commitment reiterated by Soha Gendi, the Egyptian ambassador to Ireland, this month.

But Somaia Halawa, who has jointly led the campaign for her brother's release, said it was "time to see a result" from Government pledges to win his release.

"An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was due to have a call with the Egyptian President later today as a judgment was expected".

She said she will work with his family, legal team and government colleagues to ensure that supports are put in place for his return.

A spokesman for Mr Varadkar said both the Taoiseach and the Egyptian president looked forward to the matter "being brought to an early and satisfactory conclusion so that they could concentrate on broader and normal bilateral relations between Ireland and Egypt, in areas like trade, tourism and political cooperation, in the period ahead".

We will do everything we can to enable him to come home.

No evidence implicating Mr Halawa was presented to the three-judge court.

He has been tortured and gone on hunger strikes during his imprisonment. However, a verdict is expected on Monday.

Colm O'Gorman from Amnesty International Ireland has said the outcomes of mass trials like this are very unpredictable.

"Hopefully we'll hear good news but I want to thank all of the people that have been supporting us, without their support we wouldn't be at this level", she said.
