Ghazipur garbage landfill collapse kills 2, rescue operation going on

A mound of garbage in Delhi's Ghazipur landfill has collapsed killing one person.

According to the news agency ANI, at least 4 to 5 vehicles came under the collapse and were swept into a near-by Kondli canal.

"Rescue operation is underway". An NDRF team comprising of 45 personnel was rushed to the cave-in site and a team of divers have also been pressed into service.

The man and woman who were killed have not yet been identified.

The vehicles were thrown into the canal after they were hit by garbage from the mountain-like landfill site that caved-in on the outskirts of Delhi. Delhi police and fire tenders have reached the spot.


Four people have been reportedly rescue from the site of the mishap.

One body has been recovered from Kondli canal, the Delhi Police confirmed.

Meanwhile, Ranbir Singh, EDMC Commissioner, said that the reason behind the tragedy could be ascertained only after investigation.

Meanwhile, politicking has already picked up after the incident, even as the rescue and search operations remain underway.
