Girl (5) shoots herself in the head with father's gun

The State Medical Examiner's Office completed her autopsy Wednesday and ruled the death accidental. An autopsy was completed earlier this morning, August 30.

Detectives said the girl retrieved the gun from the backpack, and was on the bed when the gun went off, the report said.

An autopsy from the the State Medical Examiner said the girl died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. The girl died August 28 after being taken to Maine Medical Center after the 7:30 p.m. shooting. He said he was there with his daughter when he moved across the room to adjust the television, and just then heard the sound of a gunshot.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says interviews are being conducted and evidence is being gathered.

Elise and her family were saying at the girl's grandparents' home in Scarborough at the time of the shooting.

Police noted the incident should serve as a reminder that gun owners should ensure firearms are secured and out of reach when children are present. The girl, her parents, and two older siblings were staying at the house while the grandparents were away, police said. Both parents were in the home at the time of the shooting.
