And he now looks set to join former Sporting Lisbon boss Marco Silva, who reportedly tried to sign him for Hull last season and is now in charge at Watford.

The 26-year-old only joined Leverkusen last summer but has been tracked by Roma and Olympiakos this summer, but Marco Silva's side have moved into pole position and are set to make a bid for the defender.

Watford have confirmed the signing of Sporting Lisbon left-back Marvin Zeegelaar for an undisclosed fee.

A move for Kieran Gibbs broke down after the England global joined West Brom from Arsenal and Zeegelaar has instead been brought in.

According to reports from Sky Sports (transfer live blog; August 31 - 14:27 pm), Watford are expected to complete a £3 million deal for the 27-year-old left-back.

The arrival of Zeegelaar - who has experience in England having spent a short time on loan at Blackpool - is added to the earlier arrival of goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.

Two signings became three as Udinese defender Molla Wague joined on a season-long loan.
