Rooney charged with drunk-driving

Former England football team captain Wayne Rooney has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, local police announced on Friday.

The vehicle allegedly belonged to his 29-year-old female office worker who was accompanying him in the auto.

Most tabloids, particularly the mass circulation red-tops, devoted pages to the Rooney story, with extensive photographs of the 29-year-old woman who has been propelled into the media spotlight, reports Xinhua news agency.

Coleen, 31, who is four months pregnant, was on holiday in Spain with their three sons, Kai, seven, Klay, four, and Kit, one, when she learned of his Friday night arrest.

The Daily Mail says Rooney will be summoned to a crisis meeting with Koeman this week to be given a humiliating reprimand.


She said: 'I allowed him to drive my vehicle, my black soft top, because I was too drunk to drive. Was I going to spend the night with him?

'We just wanted to be away from all those prying eyes'.

Later he was seen at the Bubble Room bar nearby with pals, believed to be footballer Wes Brown and the brother of Phil Bardsley.

The 31-year-old was pulled over while driving a black Volkswagen Beetle and was then taken to a police station in Middlewich where he was questioned by police officers and charged. I was swept away with the moment.

The forward, who rejoined boyhood club Everton last month, has been released on bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on September 18, according to Cheshire Police.
