Northern Lights May Be Visible From Your Backyard Tonight

"The only sure thing is that tonight is going to give us the best chance so far this season to see the Northern Lights here in the UK". This will be generated by a solar outburst which occurred in Labor Day and which might create a light show over the northern USA states on September 06 to September 07.

When it does, those particles will encounter our planet's magnetic field, get shuttled toward the North and South Poles, slam into atmospheric gases, and trigger an unusually south-reaching Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

On Monday, the sun released a large coronal mass ejection (CME), which for the past two days has been making its way to Earth.

The supercharged particles from the solar flare speed through space at a whopping 200 miles per second, according to Business Insider. This means that it is expected to reach Earth sometime on Wednesday, September 06, at night. A coronal mass ejection is "a huge explosion of magnetic field and plasma from the sun's corona", said Mark Torregrossa, a meteorologist with mlive.com in MI.

If you haven't recently checked the weather report for space, you might want to tune in. A severe such event can damage power grids on Earth and satellites.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now predicts the rare light show will stretch across all of the upper continental United States, including parts of the following states: Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. We would recommend finding a spot with clear dark skies away from any light pollution, look north and be patient.

Also, the unexpected September 06 aurora may be even harder to spot because of the bright moon set to rise as evening falls over the northern U.S. states.
