Deadline has revealed that Jonathan Pryce has been cast as the current Pope Francis in the feature film The Pope.

Filming on The Pope is set to start in Argentina in November.

Two-time Tony victor Jonathan Pryce (Miss Saigon, Comedians, Game of Thrones) will play the current head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, in the Netflix feature film The Pope, according to Deadline. (Unfortunately, we could not find any fresh hot Benedict/Hannibal Lecter memes.) The Netflix film has some powerful creative forces behind it, including director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything, the forthcoming Winston Churchill movie Darkest Hour).

The drama follows the successful HBO series "The Young Pope", starring Jude Law, which told the story of Pius XIII's pontificate.

Pryce is known for many roles, most notably Brazil, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and recently Game of Thrones, where he played another religious leader.

The choice of actors to play in the new Netflix drama may offer a glimpse into the vision behind the film.

It is not Pryce's first time to play an Argentine: In 1996, he played Colonel Juan Perón in the film version of the musical "Evita" alongside Madonna. He'll be joining Anthony Hopkins, who is playing Francis' predecessor Pope Benedict.
