Local media say the acid hit two girls in the face leaving them with facial burns, while two others are in shock.

Four American women have been attacked at a Marseille train station, according to the Daily Mail.

The two women sprayed with acid in their faces are aged 20 and 21.

A male suspect was arrested by police and the two tourists were taken to hospital.

No other information on where the USA tourists were from was released.

In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver deliberately rammed into two bus stops last month, killing a woman, but officials said it wasn't terror-related.

Marseille is a port city in southern France that is closer to Barcelona than Paris. The city is just over three hours away from Paris by train.
