Jain couple decides to leave daughter, 100-crore property for monkhood

In a week from now, couple will renounce their family ties and seek deeksha or vow in Jain monasticism at a ceremony to be held in Surat on 23 September by a Jain monk Sudhamargi Jain Acharya Ramlal Maharaj, reported PTI.

Rajendra Singh Rathore runs a factory that manufactures sacks for cement companies.

Their daughter Ibhya will now have to be arisen by the grandfather Ashok Chandaliya, who is a former Neemuch district president of BJP. Their families also happen to have an established and reputed business and also come from a political background.

PTI reported that Sumit and Anamika had chose to adopt monk's lives when their daughter was just eight-months-old.


The couple has been married for four years now and Anamika worked with Hindustan Zinc before marriage. All the family members and residents of neemuch are quite shocked about their decision.

Sumit and Anamika had taken the decision when their daughter was just 8 months old, Sumit's cousin Rekha Jain told NDTV. Sumit, a businessman, had returned to Neemuch to manage the family business, after completing a diploma in import-export management from a college in London. Property worth around Rs 100 crore, a loving wife and a daughter.

Earlier this year, a 17-year-old student, Varshil Shah, had renounced the world and become a monk soon after he secured 99.9 % marks in Class 12 Commerce examination. Digambara Jain monks - who consider the sky their clothing - still go naked. "People should worry about children abandoned by parents, or those without parents - not Ibhya, who will be raised by her maternal grandparents among children of her age".

According to Jain elders, the "tapasya" that Aradhana undertook was voluntary and the first of nine steps (nav-pad) aimed at attaining salvation, and it was not the same as the ritual of "santhara" under which the elderly or the sick abstain from food until they die. Despite the controversies, many Jain spiritual leaders have dismissed the debates by terming them as attempts to malign the community.
