Wayne Rooney returned to Everton after a 13-year absence but the Toffees have not been able to adequately compensate for the loss of former striker Romelu Lukaku who left for Manchester United on a £75million transfer last summer according to manager Ronald Koeman.

Everton will be reunited with Lukaku when they make the trip to Old Trafford to face United on Sunday, with the Belgium global already having scored six goals for his new club. This defeat for "toffee" was the third in a row, while in none of these matches Everton even scored a goal.

"It was a Premier League where it was easier to score goals, not just because of the difference between the top teams and others but also because of the profile and the tactical interpretation of the competition".

Speaking to the media, Mourinho spoke about the difficulty of the Premier League this season.

"I don't think it was my influence, no", he said, per Sky Sports.

"When I arrived in the first season there was already investments made in buying players, changing the squad, selling players, that you probably would have done in a different way".

Manchester United warmed up for the visit of Everton with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Swiss outfit Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

"In the second season, you have your influence at that level. It is the most hard country in which to win the title". I think that Romelu has a better team than Zlatan had.

Mourinho refused to enter into any debate as to how Lukaku and Ibrahimovic compare. I think it's very stupid to compare the incomparable. "I am not going to do that".
