Max Verstappen blames Sebastian Vettel for start crash

Hamilton increased his lead in the drivers' championship over Vettel and may have dealt a significant psychological blow to the German, winning after starting fifth on the grid.

The McLaren driver made a good start from eighth on the grid, but was a a victim of the crash between Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen, the Red Bull auto hitting Alonso and launching him into the air.

With his 60th race victory and seventh this season, Hamilton - who said he needed a "miracle" after struggling in qualifying - stands 28 points ahead of Vettel with six grands prix left this year.

"If it was dry it would have been much harder, the Ferraris and the Red Bulls were much stronger than us in those conditions but it was a nice reset with the rain that came in and we had intermediates to start with". Maybe he didn't see Kimi on the left but that's not an excuse I think if you are fighting for the world championship, you shouldn't take those risks and really like squeeze someone that much.

The stewards spoke to all three drivers after the race had finished but could not find sufficient fault in an incident they described as a "chain reaction", and duly ruled it had been a racing incident. A bunch of cars went missing and then I was like I still have to try to enjoy it and it was still a massive challenge, I could have easily just binned it. I've had experiences like that but I learnt that lesson, that always just comes in and reminds me in the back of my mind, it's nearly like he talks to me: "'Just stay focused, keep it together'".

Singapore was set to be a hard weekend for Hamilton and Mercedes and this proved to be the case in qualifying, with the three time champion only managing fifth on the grid. I'm not sure what happened. I capitalized on the incident.

Hamilton, who is a regular at celebrity haunts across the Atlantic with friends from the fashion and music industries as well as the world of sport, said he knew many others who had made the same decision. I hoped I would get to race Sebastian at the beginning.

A chaotic opening to Sunday's race saw Raikkonen tag Verstappen's Red Bull after making a quick start from fourth place, the accident causing the Finn to crash into his Ferrari team-mate.
