IPOB not a terrorist group - IYC tells Nigerian military

"One, IPOB is a non-violent movement", Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of IPOB leader, Mr Nnamdi Kanu, who spoke on behalf of the group told Channels Televison in a phone interview.

The decision to proscribe IPOB activities was taken at a meeting of the South-East Governors Forum in Enugu on Friday which was attended by governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu; Dave Umahi, Ebonyi; Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia; and Willie Obiano, Anambra.

He said IPOB has lost its original ideal by causing unnecessary tension and killings in the South-East which he said has affected investment drive in the region.

" Nobody wants to come to a place that is under tension that's why we want to keep pressing for peace".

"When you start a small fire, it can go very far and become hard to control".

However, report reaching us indicates that Nnamdi Kanu had sent his family members overseas for safety before mobilizing the ignorant youths in Igboland to die for a selfish cause disguised as Igbo cause. The IPOB activities were gradually getting out of the control of Nnamdi Kanu.

They called on the leaders of IPOB and all other aggrieved groups to articulate their position on all national issues and submit to the committee of governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo, and the members of the National Assembly from the zone through the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum.

He narrated how an IPOB sympathiser sent out the telephone numbers of Southeast governors, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and others. "These are people who never experienced any war in their lives", he added.

He said dialogue was the only solution to the agitations by the Independent People of Biafra as well as militants in the Southeast and Niger delta region.

Also, they assured all Nigerians, indigenes and non-indigenes, in the region of their safety, adding that they have been in touch with the Northern Governors Forum, which assured them of the safety of South-East indigenes living in the North.

The governor asked Igbo youths to stop insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders.

"Anybody that wants to foment trouble must be crushed and I want security agencies to beef up security around non-indigenes in the state and to report to me of any problem because we must maintain the peace, he added".

He said Northern governors would soon visit the Southeast to further ease tension in the country and promote national unity.

Therefore, we commend the entire Southeast Governors Forum for not sitting on the fence when this issue of IPOB started from the early stage to this ugly stage.

He said majority of the Igbo do not want secession from Nigeria but to be treated fairly and justly in the county.

His words:"That is why we are all talking about restructuring".

The governor said Operation Python Dance II was not targeted at IPOB, and that no one including the military expected that there will be violence as the Egwu Eke I that was staged previous year was largely successful.

Mr. Umahi, however, noted that injustice or marginalisation should not be a reason to talk about secession, maintaining that dialogue should be the best way to resolve and redress all differences.
