The actor is set to reprise his role as prosecutor Jack McKoy in a guest appearance on NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" later this season.

Fans of the original Law & Order are getting a special treat, as Waterston has been announced by The Hollywood Reporter to be returning. The new season is slated to return on September 27, and Waterston's episode will be a part of the new season.

Waterston joined the venerable crime drama Law & Order in 1994 and stayed through the series' end in 2010.

Waterston, who now stars in Netflix's Grace & Frankie, joined Law & Order in the show's fourth season. The fate of Jack McCoy was never explicitly revealed, but in the thirteenth season of Special Victims Unit, ADA Cutter (Linus Roache) implies that he lost the election and has been replaced by a new DA. Justice saw the return of several flagship favorites including Richard Brooks, Lorraine Toussaint and Tovah Feldshuh.

"We actually talked for a brief second about having Sam come in, but we thought it was too early", Chernuchin told THR. "Martin said, "[McCoy] will intersect with Philip Winchester's character, Peter Stone [from Chicago Justice], because of the relationship between Peter's father and Jack".

"Law & Order: SVU" season 19 is scheduled to premiere Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 9 p.m.
