He will now miss his side's final game of the season at Somerset but will also be a major doubt for England's Ashes tour of Australia.

Roland-Jones, 29, made his Test debut in the third Test against South Africa at The Oval in July.

Hameed sustained the injury to his right hand while batting in Lancashire's Specsavers County Championship defeat to Middlesex at Lord's, with his county later confirming the break on Twitter.

"All at Middlesex Cricket wish Toby a speedy recovery".

With Roland-Jones and Ollie Rayner, who suffered a side strain, out of the attack, it fell to 28-year-old Finn to lead the home bowlers on a pitch that offered him plenty of assistance.

The England selectors meet on Tuesday to pick the Ashes squad, which will be announced the following morning before the ODI against West Indies, and Roland-Jones will not be considered with the injury likely to take at least two months to heal at best and possibly much longer.

Roland-Jones' absence, however, may mean a return to the squad for his Steven Finn, while other pace options include Jake Ball and the uncapped Craig Overton.

Tom Westley and Dawid Malan are incumbents at numbers three and five, but have not sealed their places by any means.

"When you get dropped from any team there are a lot of questions you ask yourself, and there's a lot of questions asked of you by a lot of people outside our bubble", said Morgan.
