Alfa Romeo's Stelvio in Quadrifoglio guise is now the fastest SUV around the Nürburgring.

The sporty Quadrifoglio holds the fastest lap around the world renown Nurburgring in an SUV.

The 505-horsepower SUV needed just 7:51.7 to lap the circuit, squashing the previous record of 7:59.7 set by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S in 2014.

"We specifically engineered and designed the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to set world-class benchmarks and it did not disappoint with a world-record Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds", Head of Alfa Romeo, Reid Bigland, said. The Alfa Romeo tester was also the driver for the Giulia Quadrifoglio's record and is proving to be quite the expert at the 'Ring.

The flagship Stelvio Quadrifoglio will join the rest of the Stelvio range - Alfa Romeo's first SUV - in the United Kingdom in early 2018. The model integrates lightweight, state-of-the-art materials, helping deliver ideal 50/50 weight distribution, segment-leading torsional rigidity, class-exclusive carbon fiber driveshaft, and the most direct steering available, says Alfa Romeo.

Powering the auto is an aluminium, direct-injection 2.9-litre 24-valve Twin-Turbo intercooled V6 engine.

This engine produces 510bhp and 600 Nm of torque and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmissions and Q4 all-wheel drive system.

It achieved the record in 6:47.30, which is just 1.4 seconds slower than the all-time record holding Nio EP9 hypercar.
