Congress and special counsel Robert Mueller are trying to determine whether Trump associates helped the Russians in targeting the ads.

The Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian influence of the USA elections, government collusion and ongoing Russian "active measures", has invited the Big 3 digital/social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter and Google - to provide public testimony during an open hearing on November 1, the committee chairs said during a press briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Facebook on Monday handed over more than 3,000 of the Russia-linked ads to the House and Senate intelligence committees.

CNN reports Russian-linked Facebook ads specifically targeted MI and Wisconsin during the 2016 presidential election. He was joined by committee chairman, Sen.

The ads were targeted at the Democratic strongholds of Wisconsin and MI, which flipped for President Donald Trump in the election, these people said, as well as the battleground states of Florida, Georgia and Ohio. He carried both states by narrow margins.

North Carolina Republican Sen. The committee is examining Russian efforts to push out social media messages on Twitter and Facebook. "Clearly, if any of the social media platforms want to do that, we're fine with them doing that".

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has promised to strengthen the company's review of political ads and make political advertising more transparent, while continuing an investigation into what happened on Facebook during the presidential election.

"I believe they are recognizing that threat now", Warner said.
