Since the 2014 World Cup, defender Philipp Lahm, forward Miroslav Klose and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger have retired from national team play. But there was so much that was so wrong, so many alternative facts presented and fake news disseminated, it seems necessary at this juncture to point out where so many have gone so wrong. The logical choice if the US wants to go the worldwide route and hire a foreign coach again. This one went straight to the top of the charts, like it was some sort of undiscovered Beatles recording.

Matt Besler was among the American players struggling to comprehend the team's fate after losing to the last-place team in the region.

That Christian Pulisic, from his first moments in play with the US national team, could shift back and forth between the levels of the one or two teammates who seemed to think like he thought and those of the other, lesser players around him once seemed promising. He won an MLS Cup in 2013 and a U.S. Open Cup this summer over the New York Red Bulls.

Tata Martino: The former Barcelona and Argentina national team manager who is now coaching Atlanta United in MLS. One of the best tirades came from ESPN analyst and former USA player Taylor Twellman, whose embarrassment and disgust were equalled only by his anger at mediocre expectations that have long considered subpar player and team performances superb.

It's hard to imagine US coach Bruce Arena staying on. He's won three league titles and three Champions League crowns. Fabian Johnson has appeared for Borussia Monchengladbach in Champions League.

This was about how the players were handled, how they were managed and how they were (or were not) motivated.

US men's national soccer team coach Bruce Arena, center, gestures during a practice session Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, in Carson, Calif.

Caleb Porter: Like Bruce Arena, Porter has had success on many levels. And that should have been the end of Klinsmann's tenure. Its effect should bring about the end of Gulati's tenure.

"In no uncertain terms, the President of the United States Soccer Federation, Sunil Gulati, must go". But it's not exclusively a non-soccer perspective. The USSF began in 1913. There was no money, no audience and few serious players.

Granted, it's not like the World Cup is canceled.

Heads will roll like soccer balls. Virtually nowhere else is it below No. 1. 'We have some good players coming up. The U.S. has gotten positive results against Portugal, Mexico, Italy, England and Ghana during the past four World Cups.

Oh, and until earlier this year, the women's team had been waging a public campaign for equal pay, because despite their winning record they weren't receiving the same paycheck or perks as the men's side.

One petition to fire Arena has already been started.

The men's team can score a chance to play in the next World Cup, but that won't be until 2022.
