The German lost the Shanghai Masters third round clash 3-6 7-6 6-4 and lost his temper when he was broken in the third set when going down a break.

Del Porto got to the US Open semi final last month where he lost to world No1 Rafael Nadal after winning the first set.

Del Potro then secured the all-important break in the fifth game of the final set, going on to close out the match after nearly two hours on court. "This was a positive for me looking to the future".

Zverev's fury at letting the match slip became apparent in the third as he massacred his racquet as the Argentine broke for a 3-2 lead in the decider. That didn't satisfy his anger so he kept smashing the racket courtside until it was a mangled mess.

"Those are the matches I really want to win", Dimitrov said. "I just had to find my way through the whole match".

Del Potro, a 2013 Shanghai finalist, was aware he made a likely permanent impact by breaking Zverev's serve. "He's still very young and has to keep learning".

Also on Thursday, Grigor Dimitrov continued to impress as he beat Sam Querrey 6-3 7-6 (7-3). Fourth-seeded Marin Cilic defeated another American, Steve Johnson, 7-6 (1), 6-4.
