However, fast forward just under 18 months, and the Spain global has emerged as one of the Red Devils' most important players.

But the Mirror claim Mata has no interest in leaving Old Trafford at this stage in his career.

The Mirror says Mata is out of contract at the end of this season, along with team-mate and Spain compatriot Herrera, but United have the option to activate an additional 12 months on both players' contracts.

The Red Devils are ready to exercise a one-year extension clause in his current deal after the twenty-nine year old turned down the chance to move to the mega-rich Chinese Super League.

How could the Manchester United team line up against Liverpool?

The Spaniard has reportedly been approached by officials from certain clubs in the Far East about a move.

"Obviously, we also have to talk about our next Premier League game, in Anfield", he wrote on his personal blog.

Despite the presence of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Herrera in the squad Mata has started six of United's seven Premier League games this term, netting one goal against Crystal Palace, per

"There's no need to say what it means for us and for our fans, and I hope that we can play a great game and take the three points to Manchester".
