Teenage boy fatally shoots himself in West Melbourne after hours-long standoff

- The West Melbourne Police Department has reported that they responded to a disturbance on Martin Lane in West Melbourne, Florida.

The boy emerged from a bedroom while officers were interviewing relatives and began shooting at police, Cordeau said.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office's SWAT team assisted police during the hours-long standoff.

A 16-year-old has barricaded himself inside of a West Melbourne home after firing shots at officers overnight, police said.

Three people and the officers were able to get out unharmed, but two others were still inside with the shooter, according to police. Residents were told they could return to their homes around 6:45 a.m. A few homes in the immediate vicinity have been evacuated, police said.


No officers or occupants of the home were injured.

West Melbourne Police Department Capt. Richard Cordeau said during a press conference that multiple shots were fired at the officers, which continued as officers attempted to retreated from the residence.

Some homes have been evacuated on Martin Lane. There was originally two occupants left with the shooter inside the home, but the West Melbourne PD has tweeted that both have been removed from the residence. We believe the only other occupant to be shooter.
