His company's Oculus headsets that send people into artificial worlds are too expensive and confining to appeal to the masses.

The new Oculus Go device will start shipping to developers in November to enable them to start building apps.

"I am more committed than ever to the future of virtual reality", Zuckerberg said at the annual Oculus 4 conference in San Jose.

The Oculus Go will have a controller similar to that of the Samsung Gear VR, meaning devs can create apps that work on both platforms.

The company announced a permanent price cut on Rift and Touch combo, dropping the same to $399 in the US.

"The strategy for Facebook is to make the onboarding to VR as easy and cheap as possible", said Gartner analyst Brian Blau. At the moment there is no release date, just sometime early next year. "The problem is you will be spending that money on a device that only does VR and nothing else". It also includes built-in speakers that provide spatial audio, along with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

This is a considerable price differential from the flagship Oculus Rift which sold for $599.

Oculus also gave a sneak peak of the next phase of its Santa Cruz motion-tracked controllers that enhance the standalone experience of Oculus Go. That story has now been confirmed with the social media giant announcing a standalone VR headset that requires no phone or PC.

Facebook and other major technology companies such as Google and Microsoft that are betting on VR have a long way to go.

Facebook is expected to ship 213,000 Rift systems this year, while HTC is expected to ship 305,000 Vive systems, according to Super Data research. Those figures include headsets for what is known as augmented reality.

'Some people say that VR is isolating and anti-social. "Opening up more of those experiences to more of us - that's not isolating, that's freeing".

Thor will be the latest in the cast of playable characters for Marvel Powers United VR, launching for Rift in 2018.

The conference also became a witness of the launch of Oculus for Business, which is a professional Rift bundle for businesses. You can watch movies or concerts, play games, or hang out with your friends in virtual reality. The closest a user could get to a quality VR headset until now in that price range was the Samsung Gear for $129 but for which you required a compatible Samsung smartphone.
