The New MINI 1499 GT

The new MINI 1499 GT is created to evoke memories of the sporty 1275 GT version released in 1969, and like its predecessor the new model boasts a more potent engine than standard MINIs.

The Mini 1499 GT will be sold exclusively in the United Kiingdom for £299 per month and comes in the form of a beefed up Mini One - retaining the 101-horsepower (75-kilowatt), 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and six-speed manual gearbox.

However, while the 1969 vehicle achieved its 1275cc capacity by boring out the engine of the then 998cc standard Mini, the new special edition replaces the 1.2-litre engine previously used in the MINI with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo unit - it is understood the 1.2 engine is being phased out of the range to make it easier for the auto to meet future emission regulations. It produces 102bhp, which the brand says is good for 0-60mph in 10.1 seconds.

External paint options are either Pepper White with black 1499 GT side stripes, or Midnight Black with gold 1499 GT side stripes.

For the launch of the 1499 GT, MINI Financial Services has launched an enticing new finance offer. A sports suspension is fitted here, but otherwise the mechanicals are unchanged. Also fitted is the John Cooper Works Sport Pack that adds more aggressive front and rear bumpers, deeper side skirts, a split tailgate spoiler, black 17-inch Track Spoke alloy wheels, dark tinted windows and white indicator lenses instead of amber.

Inside there are sports seats in a Dinamica fabric and leather combination, a perforated leather steering wheel with red stitching and black interior trim.

Mini says that the 1499 GT recalls the "entertaining drive, distinctive styling and low running costs of the 1969 original". The order books are now open, with a production run stretching from November until February.
