In a statement to Vox, organizers with the Women's March defended the decision to give Sanders the opening-night slot. "Now more than ever, we must support the leadership of women across the country and fight together to advance our progressive agenda". There are plenty women in politics who could talk at the convention.

Many others suggested that Sanders should be replaced as speaker, and recommended qualified women for the job.

The convention aims to have participants leave inspired and motivated, with new connections, skills and strategies for working towards collective liberation for women of all races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, sexual identities, gender expressions, immigration statuses, religious faiths, and economic statuses. A spokesperson for Sanders said that the Vermont senator was invited by the Women's March, and accepted the invitation to honor "the women at the front lines of our struggle for economic, social, racial and environmental justice".

"I knew you weren't to be trusted when you threw HRC under the bus at the march, but this is beyond the pale", one user wrote on Twitter Thursday.

The event's organizers issued a statement Wednesday following the heavy backlash present on social media over Sanders.

The Women's March, which attracted hundreds of thousands of protesters the weekend of Donald Trump's inauguration, has come to symbolize the resistance to Trump's administration - but many feel that the Women's Convention, happening October 27 through 29, should kick off with, well, a woman.

The theme for this year's convention is "Reclaiming My Time", in reference to Democratic California Rep. Maxine Water's statement during a hearing earlier this year. "So we can know what we need to do to be able organize". Harris will be in Rhode Island on October 27 helping Sen. Joining Sanders and Waters as speakers are Amber Tamblyn, Angela Rye, Piper Perabo, Raquel Castaneda Lopez and Lenore Anderson, among several others. 'Although their schedules did not allow them to join us in Detroit the weekend of October 27, they will be fighting for our shared values, as they do every day'. "Many of the issues that led us to march in January 2017 are starkly visible in Detroit and its surrounding areas".
