Congressman Thompson Statement on @POTUS Trump's HOmeland Security Secretary Nomination

President Donald Trump nominated White House aide Kirstjen Nielsen to be the next secretary of Homeland Security on Wednesday.

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said.

The White House says President Donald Trump will nominate Kirstjen Nielsen to serve as his next secretary of Homeland Security. She is his choice to replace John Kelly, who is now Trump's chief of staff. The 45-year-old previously worked at the Transportation Security Administration and served on President George W. Bush's Homeland Security Council.

Ms. Nielsen was General Kelly's number two at DHS and later the White House. She now serves as Kelly's principal deputy chief of staff and was also his chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security.

If she is confirmed, Nielsen will lead a sprawling Cabinet agency charged with securing the nation's borders and airports, enforcing immigration laws, coordinating disaster relief efforts and overseeing the Secret Service and Coast Guard.

The big question is on whether or not he will succeed at sparking about order in the West Wing which is at the moment plagued by infighting and disorganization.

Among others under consideration for the DHS post were Energy Secretary Rick Perry and acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke. That might have contributed to Trump thinking about her highly.

"It is extremely important that the DHS Secretary stay above the partisan fray and not allow the position be a political pawn of the White House". -Mexican border. DHS also is responsible for recovery in the wake of multiple severe hurricanes this summer in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
