Man Killed Family Member With Cleaver, Injured Another

A Vermont man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and severely wounding his mother-in-law when he attacked them with a meat cleaver Thursday afternoon, PEOPLE confirms.

Aita Gurung, 34, was arrested on Thursday and was held at the Chittendon Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington Thursday night on suspicion of second-degree murder and attempted murder, according to jail records.

According to a tweet from the police department, the attack is believed to have started inside the home and spilled out onto the street where it was witnessed by several neighbors.

Police identified his slain wife as 32-year-old Yogeswari Khadka.

The victims suffered injuries to their heads, arms and hands.

Investigators described the cleaver as being about 10 inches long with a handle.

The couple have and 8-year-old child who was at school when the attack took place.

Police said the motive was under investigation.

Gurung was voluntarily admitted to the UVM Medical Center for a mental health evaluation after calling the police with mental health concerns, according to an October 12 Burlington Free Press article.

Police released more information about the case during a press conference Friday morning. An armed bystander was able to detain Gurung until police arrived, according to the Burlington Free Press.

The child was staying with his grandfather.
