Of course, NBA Digital and NextVR will as part of a multiyear partnership bring a regular schedule of live games in virtual reality this season. Today they announced that they're doing it again, starting with a free preview on October 21st when the Houston Rockets host the Dallas Mavericks.

NextVR is set to roll out a new set of features for this year's iteration, including live volumetric telestration, live infographics, and the live insertion of dynamic stats into the 360º environment.

It's similar to Major League Baseball enabling MLB.TV subscribers this season to use At Bat VR to watch live games on a traditional feed in a VR environment.

If you don't want to fork out $200 on a League Pass subscription just to watch in VR, you can pay $7 for the game you wish to stream, courtesy of the NBA's on-demand service.

"By committing to a schedule of VR games, we've been able to listen to fan feedback in real-time and deploy improvements on a weekly basis", said Jeff Marsilio, NBA Vice President, Global Media Distribution. Considering that a year ago fans could only use the app once a week at most, being able to watch up to 13 games every night on a giant virtual screen is a huge benefit - even if they aren't technically being streamed in VR. "The fan response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to seeing their reaction to this year's new VR capabilities".

Just like a year ago, games were selected to give all 30 teams the opportunity to play in VR at least once. With the NextVR app, you'll not only be able to watch 27 live games on your Samsung Gear VR or Google Daydream headset, but you'll also get access to something called the Screening Room. "We are continuing to advance the realism and fidelity of our NBA broadcasts and these new features will deliver the most immersive live basketball experience to date". If you don't own a Samsung VR or Google Daydream you will soon have another option with Windows Mixed Reality headset.
