Prison staff 'attacked with pool balls' by rioting inmates

Around 80 inmates are believed to be rioting in the prison's E Wing, with staff forced to flee the area.

Long Lartin is a Category A prison, meaning it houses criminals who are seen as highly risky to the public. Vans carrying Tornado squads could be seen arriving at the prison up until about midnight.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said: "We are now managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin".

John Attard, national officer for the PGA, said that the service had "dodged a bullet" by dealing with the incident so quickly.


Long Lartin is a category A men's prison, which means it hosts the most risky types of criminal such as those convicted of murder, rape or terrorism offences.

The disturbance is just the latest incident in a series hitting prisons around the UK.

The Category C facility, which houses the least unsafe class of prisoners, had reportedly been running on a "restricted regime" due to chronic staff shortages.
