World number one Nadal has not been beaten since Nick Kyrgios knocked him out of the Western & Southern Open in August and took just over an hour to dispatch Fognini 6-3 6-1.

Fognini has struggled with Nadal for 63 minutes, 9 minutes more than the duration of the match of the second round of the Spanish language.

Fognini was playing the day after being handed a suspended ban from two grand slams and $96,000 fine for verbally abusing a female umpire at the U.S. Open.

He brushed aside Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine with a 6-2, 6-3 success.

But there was little fight from the 30-year-old as Nadal lost only six points on serve in the opening set.

Federer will face the French Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals. "Maybe this match-up was maybe a bit easier and I took my chances more".

In the quarterfinals, Nadal will play sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who got past Sam Querrey of the USA 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro won the match of the day by stopping third seed Alexander Zverev, recovering from losing the opener to win 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

In the quarterfinals, Nadal will meet the iron with the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Marin Čilić of Croatia progressed with a 7-6, 6-4 win over American Steve Johnson.
