Bruno Mars looks set for success at the American Music Awards after bagging eight nominations on Thursday (12Oct17).

Rihanna, Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars are among this year's nominees for the American Music Awards. Drake, Kendrick, and Bruno are all competing for Artist of the Year alongside The Chainsmokers and Ed Sheeran.

Mars topped the list with six nods in Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Favourite Male Artiste - Pop/ Rock, Favourite Album - Soul/ R&B, Favourite Song - Soul/ R&B and Favourite Artiste - Adult Contemporary categories, reported Billboard.

Newcomer Julia Michaels is up against singer James Arthur, former One Direction star Niall Horan, rapper Post Malone and hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd for the New Artist of the Year accolade. Drake and Bruno also face each other the Pop/Rock Album of the Year, as his More Life album is up against the R&B crooner's record 24K Magic and The Weeknd's Starboy.

The Favourite Duo or Group - Pop/Rock award will have The Chainsmokers, Coldplay and Imagine Dragons in the competition.

Halsey - the 23-year-old rising star who sang on The Chainsmokers' blockbuster hit Closer, a song nominated in two categories - was among artists who voiced dismay at the lack of female representation. Popular films "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2", "Moana" and "Trolls" are competing for Top Soundtrack category.
