A Missouri state senator likened President Donald Trump to German dictator Adolf Hitler Oct 12., months after expressing she hoped the president would be assassinated.

State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal posted a meme that shows Trump taking off a shirt. By the time the shirt is off, Hitler's face is revealed in place of Trump's.

The Democratic politician made the comparison over Twitter using a highly criticized Dove ad which shows a black woman removing a t-shirt and transform into a white woman. The ad has been sharply condemned, with many calling it racist. She said she has family on the island, and the issue was "personal".

The state senator has one year left on her term, and will not be able to run for re-election next year due to term limits.

Chappelle-Nadal, who represents a district near St. Louis, came under fire in August after she wrote on Facebook that she hoped Trump would be assassinated.

Chappelle-Nadal denies posting the meme goes against her previous statement in which she said she would never "make a mistake like that again".

"Puerto Rico deserves to be part of a nation that will not authorize GENOCIDE on its own people", said Chappelle-Nadal in a tweet.
