Watch the USS McCain Lifted Onto a Ship That Ships Ships

The vice-admiral replaced Vice-Adm Joseph Aucoin two months ago following a loss of confidence in his ability to command, after the United States guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant ship near Singapore, killing 10 sailors. Sanchez, who was the commander of the USS McCain on that fateful day, and Cmdr. As the U.S. Navy's largest numbered fleet, 7th Fleet interacts with 35 other maritime nations to build maritime partnerships that foster maritime security, promote stability and prevent conflict. The statement also announced that their temporary replacements are former USS McCampbell commanding officer Cmdr.

Sanchez, of the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) were relieved of their duties by Vice Adm. Phil Sawyer, Commander, Seventh Fleet, on October 11.

The crash killed 10 United States sailors and injured five more. Sanchez, the executive officer, were said to have exercised poor "judgement" and "leadership", respectively, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement.

The McCain's sister ship, the Fitzgerald, nearly sank off the coast of Japan in June after colliding with a Philippine container ship, in an incident that killed seven sailors. It was one of several accidents in the region that raised concern over the safety and operational effectiveness of U.S. naval vessels.


The commander of the Navy's Pacific Fleet, Adm. Scott Swift, said last month he would retire early after being notified that he was not in the running to lead the U.S. Pacific Command, which oversees all U.S. military operations in the Pacific. In January, the USS Antietam ran aground near Yokosuka base in Japan, and in May the USS Lake Champlain had a minor collision with a South Korean fishing boat.

McCain, the guided-missile destroyer damaged in a collision at sea, is being transported via a heavy lift ship to Japan for repairs, the Navy reported this week.

McCain Cmdr. A. Sanchez, was reassigned to the headquarters of Naval Forces Japan and Cmdr.
