"Lisa will join the team of TEN's award-winning news and current affairs program, "The Project, ' in a hosting role".

"Further collaborations between Lisa and Network Ten will be announced in the coming months", the statement said. The partnership between Lisa and Karl has taken the show to the success it is today and we thank Lisa for everything she has done for the show and for Nine over the past 10 years.

"In a career that has spanned magazines, radio, television and digital media, Lisa has established her credentials as a leading figure in the Australian media industry".

'She has a great connection to the Australian public and a reputation that is second to none'.

Soon after she made the announcement, Network Ten announced the host would join them in January.

While it is unclear who will take the prized slot alongside Karl Stefanovic the speculation is likely to include colleague Sylvia Jefferys who recently married another Nine star, Journalist Peter Stefanovic, Karl's younger brother.

Nine was reported to have offered to increase her salary to a $A1.8m annual package, which it says would have put her and Stefanovic "on the same pay scale".

Wilkinson tweeted earlier tonight her departure, effective immediately, from her 10-year long gig as host on Today, with a press release from Channel Ten now welcoming her to the rival network.

"We express our gratitude for Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show are disappointed we find ourselves in this position".

Nine's Director of News and Current Affairs Darren Wick said that efforts had been made to negotiate a new contract for almost six months, but the two parties could not come to terms.

They joined forces after the former Cleo editor defected from Seven's weekend breakfast show.
