Choti Diwali also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas and Naraka Nivaran Chaturdashi is celebrated on October 18, 2017, a day after Dhanteras. The second day of Diwali or Deepavali is known as Naraka Chaturdashi or commonly referred to as Choti Diwali. It is believed that goddess Kali killed the powerful demon Raktabiga.According to the Hindu mythology, it is believed that on this day Lord Krishna slay the mighty demon Mahisasur and freed the people from the cruelty and brutality of the demon. The following day is known as Naraka Chaturdashi as on this day the Goddes Kaali killed Narakasura because of his bad treatment towards women. People in the states of Tamil Nadu, Goa and a few parts of Karnataka celebrate Naraka Chaturdashi as the main day of Diwali festivities, while in other parts of the country the main festival is celebrated the next day.

The day is the night before Diwali, so it is also called Choti Diwali.

Apart from Abhyang snan, people also light diyas (oil lamps), make rangolis and perform Narak Chaturdashi puja in the evening. Til or sesame oil is used for ubtan or a special face mask that is applied during the holy bath.

According to English calendar, sometimes abhyang snan also coincides with Narak Chaturdashi and the day of Lakshmi Puja. According to Drikpanchang, whenever the Chaturdashi tithi prevails before sunrise and Amavasya tithi prevails after sunset then Narak Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day. The snan is always done before sunrise during the hours when the Chaturdashi tithi prevails, the paper added. Some also believe that shopping is auspicious on this day.
