Steven Gerrard admits Nemanja Matic "was one of the toughest opponents" he played against and reveals he was "very disappointed" as a Liverpool fan to see him move to Manchester United.

Matic put in another commanding display for Man United, facing his former club Benfica, in a 1-0 victory in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Gerrard has paid tribute to the 29-year-old's qualities, and admitted that he was flabbergasted that Chelsea made a decision to sell the midfielder to a direct rival for the Premier League title.

Pointing to his fellow pundits Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand -winners of a combined 17 Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson - Gerrard suggested some of the Portuguese manager's critics are too harsh.

"He can run, he's very aggressive with the ball and without the ball, he can burst past you with it and he can catch you".

While speaking on BT Sport, Gerrard said: "He was one of the toughest opponents I played against. I hope not, ' and then it happened".

The former Liverpool captain referenced his own failure to win the Premier League, which drew a slight reaction from Scholes, the former United midfielder who won 11 league titles.

"He's had a great start at United".

No player across the United squad has completed more passes than Matic so far this season (466), while he's also top for tackles won (10) and completed take-ons (16) in the top flight of English football.
