A Rushville pastor has been arrested for child molestation.

Garry Evans, 72, has been charged with three counts of child molesting, four counts of sexual battery and five counts of child solicitation- all felonies.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the investigation began September 4 following the report of a 3-year-old female reporting inappropriate contact to her mother.

The girl told investigators that Evans lured her into his office with the promise of candy, then pulled his trousers down and made her touch his genitals.

It was there that the pastor removed his trousers and made her touch his penis, telling the three-year-old girl afterwards not to discuss the incident with anyone.

Police say the arrest is the result of a lengthy investigation into sexual misconduct allegations at the Rushville Baptist Temple located in the 1300 block of North Spencer Street.

According to an affidavit, the girl told her mother that Evans lead her to his private office with the promise of candy.

Shortly after the warrant was served, Rushville Chief of Police Craig Tucker said that all parties named in this investigation are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. That prompted several female parishioners to ask their daughters about Evans, ultimately leading police to interview four more girls under the age of 10 who also claimed to be victims, WXIN reports. She said when she told Evans "No", he just laughed.

Each incident was initiated after Evans offered the girls candy in his private office.

Police believe the molestation occurred over a period of years, the Rushville Republican reports.

Evans is now being held at the Rush County Jail without bond.
