Arby's targets hunting enthusiasts this weekend

The concept was test-driven past year in five states known for hunting, and that led to the nationwide promotion this weekend.

The elk sandwiches are available at only three locations nationwide, one of which is in Billings. The sandwich, which will cost $7, is made with thick-cut venison and crispy onions, and topped with a juniper berry sauce.

Last year, Arby's ventured into venison territory, selling a special sandwich in what the company called five "hunting-centric" states where diners were likely to be familiar with wild game. That same day, venison sandwiches will be on the menu in all 3,300 restaurants across the country.

"The positive response to our limited offering of venison previous year was so widespread and passionate that we knew we had to find a way to offer it nationwide", said Jim Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer of Arby's Restaurant Group, Inc.

The Arby's Venison Sandwich features a venison steak marinated in garlic, salt and pepper and then cooked sous-vide style (you gourmets will understand that) for three hours.

The sandwich is 490 calories, according to the restaurant chain. In fact, the Montana Wildlife Federation (MWF) recently sent a letter to Arby's corporate office, asking that they not allow the sale of this sandwich as it goes against Montanans view on farm-raised game. "They certainly probably had the best of intentions, but it's not the best way to honor our hunting heritage in Montana".

He continued by saying that game farms, which were banned in Montana in 2000, contribute to the spread of diseases and are often used for the "unethical shooting" of animals, reports KRTV.
