Contractor killed at Suncor oilsands operation near Fort McMurray

A contractor was killed in an incident at Suncor Energy's Millennium oil sands mine near Fort McMurray, northern Alberta, on Friday morning, a Suncor spokeswoman said.

The contractor was somehow buried while involved in the trenching work and succumbed to the injuries, Alberta Labour spokesman Trent Bancarz said.

The man was employed by Aecon (ARE.TO) Mining.

A spokesperson with Suncor has confirmed to CTV News that one person has died following an incident on a worksite north of Fort McMurray. We will also undertake a thorough investigation into the matter. "Earlier this morning, our personnel immediately responded to an incident where the person was working".


Family was being notified and the gender and the age of the contractor is not being released at this time, she said. "Unfortunately, they were pronounced deceased at the scene".

Seetal said no other workers were injured and everyone has been accounted for.

"We are extending our sincerest and deepest condolences to the person's family, friends and co-workers".

RCMP are investigating along with occupational health and safety officials.
