Nets beat Magic 126-121 in first game without Lin

"I can't imagine him having a better game than he did tonight", Orlando coach Frank Vogel said of Vucevic. "Jeremy remains an important part of this team and will continue to contribute in a leadership role".

The Nets confirmed what many suspected Thursday morning, making Lin the second player to go down for the season with a serious injury after Gordon Hayward was injured in Boston's season-opening loss at Cleveland Tuesday.

Unfortunately for the Nets, they're familiar with lengthy absences by Lin but this time they're hoping their roster is better equipped to handle it.

Coach Kenny Atkinson was frustrated with the Nets' play on both ends, though understood there would an adjustment as players got used to new rotations without their starting guard.

On the day after they learned that Jeremy Lin will miss the final 81 games with a season-ending ruptured right patella tendon suffered in the first game of the season, the revamped Nets again struggled with turnovers and defense.

Watching D'Angelo Russell make plays in crunch time is likely what Lin meant.

Russell scored 30 points in his Brooklyn debut after being acquired for Brook Lopez in the offseason. He added 12 rebounds and hit 17 of 22 shots but it was not enough for Orlando, which lost despite hitting 18 3-pointers.

"That's just a talented player and he's going to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game", said Atkinson, who referred to Russell's crossover drive on rookie Jonathan Isaac to the rim as a "jitterbug" move. "We were able to score. It's the little things - defense, rebounding, transition, little things that'll get us over the hump".

Last season, the Nets allowed at least 50 percent shooting in 22 games and lost each time.

Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets lock horns in a 2017 National Basketball Association regular season matchup on Friday at 7:30 PM EST at Barclays Center.

Orlando is looking to win its first two games for the first time since 2012-13 after emphasizing defensive improvement during the preseason.

Magic was successful casting the appropriate spells in their season opener with a 109-116 win over Miami Heat on Wednesday.

Booker added 11 rebounds and made the clinching free throws with 0.9 seconds left after Orlando's Evan Fournier missed a tying 3-point attempt. The Nets then survived a 3-pointer by Terrence Ross with 14 seconds left and a missed 3-pointer by Fournier with three seconds left.

"We definitely wanted it, and it showed", Booker said. Booker notched 20 points grabbing 10 rebounds in the season opener.

"But we should have never been in that situation anyway", he said. "The bench gave us that energy". "We did too many mistakes defensively".
