Despite their public approach to dating, their love has blossomed in private, beginning with their first date.

"He was sitting there in his wife shirt, very confident and manly, but then he was just so talkative!"

"I nearly yelled out 'Alex, ' but I am the shyest person when it comes to things like that", Lopez said. "I say, 'It's Jennifer.' He says, 'You look so lovely.'" Aww! "I didn't know if it was a date", Rodriguez admits to the magazine.

The former athlete admitted to Vanity Fair that he wasn't totally sure if it actually was a first date, but he "thought it would be a win-win" situation either way. And then, I knew that he was nervous because he asked me if I wanted to take a drink. I said, "No, I don't drink", and he asked if I minded if he had one. "He was nervous, and it was really cute". He deployed a useful baseball metaphor for that moment. Though she told him, "You don't have to say you remember if you don't", he replied, "Shea Stadium, during a subway series".

"I had to get up and go re-adjust my thoughts", he said.

What did he text?

Lopez then received the text from the father of two, which read, "You look sexy AF". And if that wasn't hot enough, the fire alarms in the restaurant went off, because Jennifer's life is literally a romantic comedy. "We are very much twins", Rodriguez told VF. But both of them also share humble beginnings - Jenny from the Block sharing a bedroom with two sisters in the Bronx, and Rodriguez born to Dominican Republic emigrants, born in NY before growing up in Miami. "I thought I would be a win-win no matter what".

It's a charming first date story, but just one of the many examples Lopez and Rodriguez's relationship has felt so easy. "In his 20s, he came into big success with the biggest baseball contact [at the time]".

After Gigli, though, Lopez went on to make plenty more movies (and albums, and music videos, and tv shows) - she's definitely done more than just pick herself up. "And more importantly than anything, we had both done a lot of work on ourselves".

Lopez explained that she was impressed with her boyfriend's decision to use his lowest point as a way of encouraging himself to become a better person.

"The hardest times to prove who you are".

McLean writes: "Each believes that if they had been single when they met, 12 years ago, the relationship wouldn't have worked. He just comes back stronger".

"We had to grow and discover ourselves first", Jennifer said.
