The eight movies got their own tie-in games from Electronic Arts, while Lego Harry Potter versions from Warner Bros. came later. The game, which is AR in nature, will be developed by Niantic Labs, which happens to be the brains behind the hit mobile game, "Pokemon GO".

Tech Radar is also reporting that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is just one game in a series called Portkey Games that Niantic is developing.

The game's use of real locations is similar to Niantic and Nintendo Co Ltd's Pokemon Go, which became the first mass market adoption of AR in July 2016 and allows players to "catch" animated characters that appeared in their real surroundings.

Niantic also added that players will get to experience J.K. Rowling's wizarding world. "Players will learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies". Intriguingly, the games might show these familiar characters "at different points in their lives" from the Harry Potter series. Interactive Entertainment and WB Games San Francisco's development team on the project.

"With Portkey Games, we are thrilled to answer the fans' requests for more games inspired by J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World", the president of Warner Bros. In an interview with BBC, IHS Markit consultancy's Piers Harding-Rolls believes that the upcoming "Harry Potter" game was promising and would be an apt "follow-up" to "Pokemon Go".

Furthermore, the report noted that the creation of Portkey Games will usher in a new wave of "Harry Potter" games for consoles after a relatively long hiatus.

However, there's been no word yet on an official release date for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

There are no further details about any of the new Harry Potter games, but more details are expected to be revealed "very soon".
