The stigma is related to the negative reactions some diagnosed with lung cancer may experience, including concern about giving the impression they must be a smoker. Lung cancer impacts everyone it touches, from individuals battling the disease to families who help care for them.

There are some 18,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in California each year. It is also a disease with a particularly poor prognosis, with fewer than 10 per cent of patients in Scotland surviving longer than five years from diagnosis. He chose to do a little more testing and found that I had cancer. It is so important for people to understand that this is the nation's number one killer.

The Springfield Regional Cancer Center had done smaller gatherings on the subject in the past, but with the recent launch of a lung cancer screening program, this seemed like a good time to build awareness, according to Chaundra Foss-Blizard, a clinical research nurse at the center.

Potential signs are a cough that does not go away, shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, trouble breathing, wheezing, coughing up blood, hoarseness, loss of appetite, weight loss (for no known reason), feeling very exhausted, trouble swallowing, swelling of the face and/or veins in the neck, and infection in your lungs that keep coming back.

"If you went to your doctor and said you felt exhausted they wouldn't automatically think you've got lung cancer".

As for me, I thought I was having a heart attack.

"Ideally we would love it to be on the same par as breast cancer, as prostate cancer - all these kind of things".

Tennessee has the sixth highest incidence rate of lung cancer nationally, and incidence rates for white and black men are between 50 to 100 percent higher than the national rate. "It's non-specific things that people would go along to their GP with".
