During the construction you will use the versatile proprietary platform for electric cars - VW MEB, which allows you to build an electric auto with any drive is front, rear or full. Many fans of the Beetle preferred the older generation of those cars when they had engines out back and rear wheel drive.

Diess denies that a firm decision on the Beetle's successor has been made.

"The next decision on electric cars will be what kind of emotional concepts we need", says Diess. The vehicle would compliment the new Volkswagen Microbus, based on the ID Buzz Concept shown early this year at the Detroit auto show. The executive notes MEB is an ally for "emotional concepts" thanks to its flexibility. You can do derivatives efficiently.

VWs RWD electric platform was previewed by the ID Hatchback seen previous year. It runs a single electric motor developing 168bhp that is mounted within the rear axle assembly, providing drive to the rear wheels. The modernized version of the Beetle grew and went front-wheel drive. VW's EV platform called MEB (Modular Electric Baukasten) is very flexible and is capable of producing an electric Beetle with its original rear-wheel drive.

Volkswagen hasn't started working on one, but Diess said that the concept of an electric Beetle would be put forward when the company's board votes on ways to expand the company's range of electric cars. The VW MEB platform will support 15 new electric models, and five of those will be branded as VWs.
