Temperatures drop below freezing - but more prolonged cold spell still to come

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples added: "This would make it the coldest night of autumn so far and the cold weather will last until mid-week before temperatures start to recover".

Temperatures will plunge way below zero tonight with some areas of the United Kingdom dipping as low as -8C, the Met Office said.

Now snow threatens to fall across the highlands in Scotland this morning, as forecasters say rain from the north will hit the coldest areas.

"Computer models consistently point towards cold weather for much of the second half of November, with colder air displaced from the Arctic".

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: "We've had three short cold snaps over the past three weekends but it will become less cold over the coming days, before another, more prolonged, cold spell into next weekend".

Early risers braved snow-covered hills in the Pennines, Cumbria, this morning, with reports of the white stuff settling in the Cairngorms in Scotland and Snowdonia in Wales.


Widespread frost in southern England saw the mercury dip to minus 5C overnight - chillier than Russia's most northerly city Murmansk, where it was minus 1C.

There could even be a slight covering at lower levels in the raw wind with top temperatures only reaching single figures across most regions.

"The cold winds coming straight from the Arctic will carry with them a few showers and will be cold enough to fall as sleet or snow over some northern hills".

"There's every possibility of temperatures as cold or colder than Monday morning".

"The following week has an increasing chance of generally cold weather with a risk of snow in places, especially the North".

From December 10, the risk of snow across the United Kingdom will increase as minimum temperatures could exceed the coldest of the season.
